Arguably One Of The Most Important Ways To Stay Healthy

November 8, 2017  •  By Seamus Mullen

It is important to eat not only for yourself but also for the bacteria that lives within and on us- our micro biome.  These trillions of microbes form an integral part of our wellbeing and immune system and are highly effected by the foods we eat. As a general rule, I like to eat plenty of foods that are PREbiotic and also include foods that are PRObiotic every day.

PREbiotic foods are foods that the good critters in our guts like to eat, that’s mainly fibrous, cruciferous vegetables, so I make sure to eat some nutrient dense veggies with every meal. PRObiotic simply means including foods into my daily diet that help cultivate a DIVERSITY of bacteria within. That means some living foods like sauerkraut, kefir, aged cheese and cured meats in moderation. This doesn’t mean to concern yourself with eating a tonne of fermented foods every day, all day long, but rather try to make sure to eat at least a few bites of something living everyday. Remember, diversity is the name of the game- the more diverse the population of our gut's bacteria, the better prepared we are to address potential health issues.
